THE FOG – Sacred Activism
Philosophers have debated for years the good which can be achieved through the recognition of beauty and the practice of justice and equality. However the common good does not seem to be on the minds of the people of planet earth. Today’s traveler seems more concerned with profit margins and how to retire in luxury. Now more than at any other time in human history we have to wake up to the grave situation we have created for ourselves. As the world vehemently reflects back to us what we have created it is not pretty. Like Plato’s cave we are distracted by illusion and crave the thing which is killing us. As a result we are failing to see the disaster we are creating. The opportunity to create something of beauty may still exist but it has been relegated to the back seat. It shares this seat with justice and equality. The common good is now the back seat guy who no one seems to listen to.
In the sacred gnostic codex called Poimandres or The Divine Mind we are told that “when the body is sleeping the spirit is free”. This is a different sleep than the sleep of ignorance. This is the sleep of craving in the body. Craving as our Buddhist friends tell us cause a multitude of problems. Craving is attachment. It is when we stop craving that our body is at rest. And when our body is at rest it is not obsessed with the object of its craving. Therefore when craving stops the body can sleep soundly and the spirit is free to focus and pursue the things which truly give it life. Things like beauty, justice and equality.
But today we see attachment everywhere we turn. We are bombarded with images which cannot be avoided. At least not without a conscious commitment to do so. For the mind to be free it must wake up refreshed after a restful sleep. This is not the sleep of ignorance but the sleep of rejuvenation. In light of everything I have written in past blogs this may sound like a contradiction. So let me explain it this way. Ignorance wants reality to sleep so it can be the dominant force to confuse and control the individual. Likewise as we awaken to spiritual realities the mind will induce a sleep over ignorance to keep it confused and at bay. We must always remember that the mind is pliable and will take the form of the entity which dominates. A mind is impressionable and much like wax it will receive the impression which is pressed upon it. Therefore it is better for ignorance and craving to sleep than it is for spiritual reality and freedom to sleep. This is how the mind can free itself of the body and the materiality of seduction, deceit and distraction.
At one end of the continuum we have the deep sleep of ignorance. At the other end we have the complete wakefulness of consciousness. These two are connected and one depends on the other to exist. This is the Yin and Yang of duality. Where we are along this continuum indicates how mindful we maybe at any given moment in time.
So what about the future? Let us use the obsession of retirement. The other day I spoke with a retired couple who had just returned from a Mediterranean cruise. I was happy for them. It seemed they had invested wisely. But what had they invested in? The reason I ask this is because many of us are exposed to advertising which sends the message that if we do not invest in financial awareness we will have a bleak retirement. So I ask again what is retirement? I would say retirement is another illusion. The speculators tell us that if we do not plan for retirement we will become unhappy and maybe never be able to retire at all. But again, retire to what? I would suggest that speculators encourage us to invest so they can retire. After all don’t they get their cut even if all our investments fail. This sounds like a fear based system built on craving, greed and illusion. In other words if we continue to chase the money our long search for happiness will finally be fulfilled in retirement. However what may be closer to the truth is that we never retire. We are always on a journey and if I think my investments will make me happy then I have been deceived. I am not suggesting that it is not a good idea to plan as much as we can for the future so we can live a life which is comfortable and less burdensome for both us our families and society. However what I am suggesting is that we must firstly invest in in spiritual realty rather than the monetary illusions we chase in the hope of one day finding happiness. The person therefore at the wakeful end of the continuum will be much more likely to find happiness regardless of what their bank account looks like. Here ladies and gentleman we find one of the main problems with humanity and why the ability to share in the common good is so problematic. People can be financially secure, but that alone will not make them happy or wiser. As we fixate upon our imagined departure from the labours of daily life we may also be reinforcing the inequalities which further the unfair distribution of wealth.
I know throwing secular wisdom to the wind sounds ridiculous to most of society. Especially the entitled. But ask yourself. Truly ask yourself. Would I contribute to making the world a better place if it meant sharing everything I worked for monetarily to be thrown into a universal melting pot? Can society even begin to imagine a paradigm shift in which wealth is considered a by by-product of happiness rather than happiness being a by-product of wealth. Imagine if the payoff for education and hard work was only happiness, peace and contentment. Would you still work as hard? Believe it or not there are some people who actually live this way.
If we can only begin to practice sacred activism then maybe the sharing gene will manifest to such an extent that the birthing of homo spiritus will proliferate human consciousness and the human family will discover the value and wisdom to invest in what it can see and feel in the present moment. To only invest in a future which can be bought and sold is a manifestation of an arrogant imagination founded on magical thinking.
To move beyond the magical thinking of the shire humanity must pick up the mantle of sacred activism. This will ground us in the present and we will know what we must do next to live in harmony with Mother Earth. Someday the star which we call the sun will burnout. This is why some people think it is important to explore the cosmos to find a new place to colonize. Exploration may be important to grow and learn about our origins and how we can continue this space walk. However if we do not grow here on earth first and care for mother earth then we will all be gone before our sun ceases to warm and care for us. To talk about space travel for humanity to survive is ludacris when our planet is quickly losing interest in keeping us alive due to the atrocities we are committing to all forms of life.
Today we need to invest in a sacred activism so humanity can awaken from its homicidal rage. Unless the maniacal cunningness of ignorance is challenged in those who hold the reins of power we will all have to face a retirement trapped in shame, remorse and un-quenching guilt. Sacred Activisim can be described as follows.
A sacred power greater than ourselves alone which embodies a transforming force of compassion in action that is born of deep spiritual knowledge, courage, love, and passion, resulting in the incarnation of wise radical action in the world.
After researching some of the steps put forth by so called spiritual guru’s on how to develop sacred activism I found they had much in common with the 12 steps from self-help programs. In fact if I did not know better I would say they borrowed these ideas from them. But the truth to my mind is that nothing is new and everything becomes new again. For instance the 12 steps originally came from old spiritual systems of thought which were rewritten for today. So keeping this in mind here are 12 spiritual steps for sacred activism to reflect on.
- Accept responsibility for the Earth as it is and consciously ask for its guidance
- Practice the power of gratitude to experience deeper levels of consciousness
- Look for the truth which will restore authenticity
- Welcome forgiveness to share forgiveness
- Willingly receive openness to willingly become open to others
- Acknowledge imperfection to receive the grace of wakefulness
- Submit to the purification of love actualized
- Face the fears of freedom
- Confront your fears
- Share your fears
- Use your energy mindfully
- Let your awakening spirit embrace universal compassion
There is an old adage that says, “As the world turns, so it burns”. Doesn’t this sound like an old soap opera? Today we can tune our satellite sets to watch the new soap opera of reality TV. Networks like CNN or Fox news have become the venue where all our dysfunctional drama can be played out on the world stage. My Granddaughter recently introduced me to a Katy Perry song called Chained to the Rhythm . In part the lyrics and chorus go like this.
Are we crazy?
Living our lives through a lens
Trapped in our white-picket fence
So comfortable, we live in a bubble,
So comfortable, we cannot see the trouble
Turn it up, it’s your favorite song
Dance, dance, dance to the distortion
Turn it up, keep it on repeat
Stumbling around like a wasted zombie
Yeah, we think we’re free
Drink, this one is on me
We’re all chained to the rhythm
It is my desire
Break down the walls to connect, inspire
Ay, up in your high place, liars
Time is ticking for the empire
The truth they feed is feeble
As so many times before
They greed over the people
They stumbling and fumbling and we’re about to riot
They woke up, they woke up the lions
I am grateful that my granddaughter of ten years of age introduced me to this music. If she continues to get positive messages from social medial then the world may become a better place. Thank you Katy.
